It definitely looks like a great location. We have never made it into Dupont Circle. I am looking forward to seeing some of the Embassies. Any recommended / must see ones?

tchoiniere May 6th, 2015 09:05 AM

I cannot wait for tomorrow. Will be getting up much too early but hopefully can sleep on the train. And then we can begin our mad dash through DC. Tomorrow will be hectic as we are planning on parts of the American History Museum and the Natural History Museum - time permitting. Then ChurchKey for dinner.

Definitely going to be a hot weekend which is not what I wanted but I will take it and fry...Then the Nationals game Friday night. Was at the Nats @ Mets game Saturday night and froze. Will be the opposite this night! But we will see Gio Gonzalez again.

I am really looking forward to the hotel location as I have never been in that area and based on Google maps, it looks like a great area.

Regarding embassies, here's a bit of irony for you. Saturday the 9th is "open house" at participating European embassies a number of which are in close proximity to your hotel -- which I believe is one of the sponsors of the event. It's free.

Long ago, before September 11th, embassies were pretty friendly about visitors. Not at all anymore although I do recall a holiday tour of some a few years ago. This is a great opportunities to visit. I'm planning to check out a few.

My husband is super excited about the flyover. He and some of his NASA colleagues rescheduled a program review so they could be outside during the event. The weather looks good -- tho hot as you said.

Hope you have a great weekend, tchoiniere.

The yearly Embassy open houses are great. Lots of interesting info and some with good food and music. The more popular ones have lines so plan accordingly.

Thanks for posting that about the open houses. May try to get back from Udvar Hazy to at least get to one. May be a longshot but something to keep in mind.

A lot of coworkers can't wait for my pics as they wanted to go to the flyover. Plus the plane I work on (F35) is on display there.

Only part I am not looking forward to is the 3:45 am alarm in the morning.

Now I am in trouble. Saturday night is DC Craft Beer Fest at the Convention Center.

Train ride was eventful. Ended up bloodied and battered after I gouged my leg on something under my chair. Am fine now but will put the frustrating part in my trip report

Gave up on museums after 10 minutes due to school groups. Their parents would be ashamed to see them laying all over the museum.

But Churchkey is great so far.
Hotel is great and in a great location. Little hot but it's May!

Yikes! Hope the rest of your trip makes up for the train event!

tchoiniere May 7th, 2015 05:02 PM

It already has after Churchkey today! We are already are laughing about it.

Flyover was amazing. Sat at the base of the Washington Monument looking straight at Lincoln. Glad I came down for it. Back at hotel for a refresh then lunch and a baseball game.

tchoiniere May 8th, 2015 07:03 PM

And a great win for the Nats tonight!

obxgirl May 8th, 2015 07:13 PM

Bonus day for you, tchoiniere! My husband echoes your opinion about the flyover.

tomfuller May 9th, 2015 05:11 AM

I heard that one of the old planes had engine problems and had to pull out of formation. It landed at Reagan National.

LouisaH May 9th, 2015 06:47 AM

tchoiniere, how wonderful that you had such a great view! The part I saw was amazing and I thought about how much my father would have enjoyed it. He served in the Army Air Corps during WW II (before it became the Air Force) and wanted to fly but he was color blind so he was an airplane mechanic during the war.

Go Nats!

tchoiniere May 9th, 2015 10:54 AM

Louisa, I kept thinking about my grandfather and how much he would have enjoyed it. He was also Army Air Corps serving in the Pacific Theater. I broke down at times yesterday as its ten years this year that he passed away from ALS.

Today was a disappointing day at Udvar Hazy as there was only 1 plane from yesterday there as the rest were grounded due to the weather. But still enjoyed the museum.

The DC Beer Fest was great. Had a lot of good beers. Now at Hard Rock DC for a few nightcaps

tchoiniere May 10th, 2015 01:01 PM

Ill get a trip report up this week but it was a fun but much too short of a trip. I did not want to get on the train to come home today.

obxgirl May 10th, 2015 03:44 PM

tchoiniere - I look forward to your report. You always pack a lot into your visits w/out it being crazy making. Hope you had a safe trip home.
