DC on the cheap?
I'll be in DC in November for a conference at the Convention center. This is my first trip to DC since I was 11 and my travel companion's first time ever. I know sightseeing in DC is easy on the grad student wallet, but are there any suggestions for good dinner spots in the convention center area for less than $20/person? I'm a foodie on a budget, so I'm looking for the hidden treasures, something other than Applebee's or pizza hut.

Check out these 4 places highlighted by the Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp...mp;option=4000
In addition, you might also try Ella's, Matchbox, Jaleo and Zaytinya (these last two -- very in/hip places -- may be cheaper to the extent that they serve tapas). Also try Ginger Cove (Caribbean) and, farther afield Red Sage Cafe (Tex/Mex). |
All of the above are good suggestions (except Ella's pizza, IMO). Chinatown is also nearby: Eat First, Full Kee, and Li Ho are all good, inexpensive options. In addition to authentic cuisine (which is great), most Chinatown spots also offer Americanized choices (geared strictly to the timid tousists: orange beef, General Tso's, etc. - which are never good). Adventerous ordering will yeild the best results.

Jaleo is great -- we were just there on Saturday...but it is easy to exceed your budget there with just one more tapas....or one more glass of wine or beer....
There are a lot of good choices in the area. You are going to have a great time. |
oh I almost forgot -- about a block from the convention center, just past D St on 7th (headed toward the Mall) is a 1/2 price ticket center where you can get tickets for special concerts, plays, etc. I think they open at 11AM Tues-Sat...
