DC Metro to other sites?
Four mid-50s adults will be in DC in Oct staying in Dupont Circle area. We will not have a car. We plan to walk to monuments and museums. Can we take the Metro to Arlington and also to Mount Vernon? Any other places we should consider? Thanks so much.

Arlington, yes; on the Blue Line.

Arlington is easy via metro. For Mt Vernon you have to metro to Huntington Station in Virginia and then take Fairfax connector bus #101 (20 min ride) out to Mt Vernon. There is also a $30 (round trip) cruise to Mt Vernon I think.

Thank you so much for this information. I didn't know about getting there by boat - will check that out and also all the links provided.

I've done Mount Vernon by boat. It's a great, relaxing trip and gives you the perfect amount of time on-site.

Depending on how much time you have and your interests, you could also go to Baltimore for a day, perhaps checking out the National Aquarium, etc. From Dupont Circle, just hop on the Red Line to Union Station and take a commuter train up.

Careful about relying on the DC Metro, which is undergoing extensive, long-term track work. This schedule might help you avoid the worst of it:

Sorry, I failed to note you are planning for OCTOBER, when the ordeal known as SAFETRACK should have concluded! Have a great trip.
