DC in July - Crystal City Doubletree a good option?
My family (17-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter) will be traveling to DC July 17, 2010 for 3 days. I'm arriving on a Saturday so I can only take advantage of the great hotel deals the first night, but was able to find someone reasonable at the Crystal City Doubletree Hotel. Can anyone provide information on the location on this hotel? Its proximity to the metro/bus station? How safe the area is after dark since I would like to stay in DC to see the monuments in the evening. It offers a shuttle to a metro station, so I don't know if that means it's too far to walk or unsafe.

Thanks for the info. I checked the sites provided and find that the station is about .3 miles away, which is great. On the map, though, it looks like we have to go over/under some highways. Anyone know how I get there? Is there a tunnel or a walkway?

There are sidewalks and empty lots. No highways. Army Navy is a major street that runs parallel to a highway. The Doubletree, coming from Pentagon City, is next to another highway.
If you come from Crystal City, you would need to go under a highway.

I stayed in a hotel in CC at the opposite end from the Doubletree two years ago when my daughter and I were attending the Legg Mason Tennis tournament in early August. Don't know about the specifics of getting to the Doubletree but our hotel had the same issue being a good 10 minute walk to the hotel from the metro.
We got back to CC from the tournament around 11 on a weeknight. The area was much busier, mostly tourist families, than I would have have guessed. There were are also cabs around. ( I wouldn't expect to see the same in February)
If you are really uncomfortable (and it doesn't sound like you are) then I'd catch a cab on the mall downtown after you're done seeing the monuments. At night it ought to be a 10 min ride or less from the Washington monument area.
