DC hotel Dupont Circle or Penn Quarter

We are planning a trip in Jan focused on seeing the Gay Portrait Show . We have narrowed to Penn quarter or Dupont Circle areas. We would like a comfortable room ( preferably a small suite) and a pool would be great but not necessary. We want neighborhood feel, walk to ethnic restaurants in the eve, comfortable king bed. We are considering Carlyle Suites but still open and interested in suggestions . Price not primary but not highest end. Thanks.

Either area is fine. Without dates, it is hard to give specific recommendations. Look for some hotels, narrow it down and come back with the list.

The Kimpton hotels are nice. Look at The Palomar on P Street

What is the Gay portrait show? Is it at the National Portrait Gallery? I think I might have seen it if it is already open.

Dates are in January, as I said. Do specific dates matter? We are thinking of either 14-17 or 21 to 24, depending on whether it seems Martin Luther King weekend is more expensive.
Yes, the show is at National Portrait gallery and is on now to Feb 14; the first GLBT show with federal funding ( perhaps they didn't realize, LOL).

I looked at Palomar, it looks lovely but a suite there is much more expensive but will consider.
thanks

I'd go with the Carlisle Suites. You won't find a suite in the Dupont area or (especially) Penn Quarter for less.

Other ideas -

DUPONT:

I was going to suggest the Marriott residence inn as well - we didn't stay there, but we walked past it and the location is good. We stayed at the Dupont Hotel, which we liked, but the rooms are probably small for what you are looking for. Nice hotel though and probably the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in.

I am not familiar with Penn Quarter, but we really liked Dupont Circle - definitely has the neighborhood feel with plenty of good ethnic restaurants to choose from.

Penn Quarter is great for visiting the National Portrait Gallery, which may even be in Penn Quarter.

We recently stayed in Penn Quarter, and I highly recommend the restaurant Proof; Jaleo is a perennial favorite; we also liked Oyamel. There are lots of great places to choose from!

Carlyle Suites is a good choice for a budget - not terribly close to the subway, but not THAT far either.

Here are a few good places you can walk to from your hotel in the evenings:

bardo1: What a great and varied list! Thank you so much.
The Carlyle Suites just captured our fancy for several reasons beyond budget. Usually have good luck going with our instincts, so we shall see. I google walked to subway, was about three blocks, so that seems fine.
I should probably start a new thread, but do you know of any events related to MLK ( esp. concerts), we should check out? I have not yet researched this, but thought you might have ideas.
