We are thinking of a trip to DC in late September. I always enjoy taking 'ghost' walking tours as you get some unique stories & histories of the city (in other words, I'm open-minded but really not looking for any ghosts, just some history & fun).

There are SO many ghost walking tours in the DC area (saw some that looked pretty good in Alexandria). If you've been on one of these tours or are familiar with them and the areas they cover, can you please comment or make some recommendations?

I've been on one of the ghost tours in Alexandria. It's a pretty cheesy event (the tour guide dresses in a Colonial Costume) and the stories are basically they type of stories you would expect to hear around a campfire. But it's fun enough, and I'm the type of person who enjoys cheesy ghost stories. The best thing about the tour in Alexandria is the location, as Old Town Alexandria is a pretty fun area for shopping and/or dining.

If you want a more "scientific" ghost tour, then you would want to head to Leesburg. The guide for this tour was actually featured on Penn and Teller's Bullsh!t show.

I went on the Washington DC Ghost Tour in June and I love it! It was the perfect blend of history and ghost stories. It goes around the park that surrounds the White House and includes stories about St. John's Church and Dolly Madison's house. It was great and there was nothing cheesy about it. They even posted our pictures on their website www.dcghosttours.com

Well there are more and more places that you can;t get into without a security check - including any sizable office building as well as ball parks, some national park sites and now some movie chains. If that's going to stop you - well you'll run out of things to see/do. Never mind that every train and bus station and airport have military security as well as anti-terrorist police presence.

We didn't find the White House boring - since it's the White House - and you're going for the history and to get inside it at all (which most people never will).

I didn't find the White House boring at all, it is the White House, after all, and that is exactly why people are going there. People aren't going just because it is an old house, now are they, nor to see antiques (which you could do in a museum or many other places). It's because it is a part of history and the President's residence. Of course you aren't going to tour the entire building, the President lives there and people work there, they can't have tourists trooping all over the place.

But at least Carolbert's friends seem to have similar taste, so that worked for them.

What's the big deal of having to go through security, you do it at airports and most of the museums in Washington and other venues. It doesn't take long, is hardly painful. It's funny as I live in DC and go around that area just as part of life even when not visiting the White House (of course), don't know why it's so painful to go near it. YOu can easily walk on nearby streets and easily walk by many govt buildings. All of them that I can think of except you can't walk within a few feet of the White House, of course, due to the fence.

Some people are just more interested in history, historic buildings, etc. than fantasy like ghosts, but people should know which camp they fall into.
