DC crowded in August?

I'm reading conflicting messages about the best time of year to travel to DC. Some reports say August is a slow month with reduced crowds. Other sites reference "summer crowds."

Is August considered a busy travel month in DC? Unfortunately, August is about my only travel option, so my decision is whether to go or not. (I live in Florida, so I'm not overly concerned about the summer heat.)

Thanks in advance.

Just go (or come since I am actually in DC right now). A lot of locals leave for vacation at that time of year.

Things are likely to thin out when Southern families have to go home so their kids can start school, mid month.

No.

Family travel tapers off as the start of the school year approaches, so late August isn't peak "summer crowds" season; and convention business is slow then too.
