DC 7/4 fireworks
We'll be in DC for the fourth of July and my husband is hellbent on seeing the fireworks on the Mall. We did this 20 yrs. ago and the crowds, food and crush on the Metro were awful. Is there some other place where the fireworks can be seen, but away from the maddening crowd? Thanks in advance!

Topping for you..yes, lots of places including over here in Northern Virginia..places like the Iwo Jima Memorial where there will be crowds and parking will be difficult.
Am sure others will comment. The crowds are still large at the Mall; it can be a pain getting away from there on the Metro. There's absolutely nothing like watching the fireworks directly overhead. |
I think the biggest tip when considering a massive event like this is simple: manage your expectations. If you expect it to be a breeze, you'll be disappointed/frustrated/upset. If you anticipate the crowds -- bear in mind that since 20 years ago when you were last here, security restrictions on access to the Mall have been tightened significantly -- and take your time -- bring plenty of water and snacks, a book or two to pass the time -- it'll be quite inconvenient and time-consuming to be sure, but not much else.

I thought of Iwo Jima, too, but you suggest you're staying in DC. If you are staying IN DC, I wouldn't go to Virginia, because getting back into DC will be a pain, too. (If you'll be in VA or MD, then, Iwo Jima is worth considering, but there will be a lot of people parked along the side of the road, and the fields aren't empty.
Traffic in DC is ridiculous after the fireworks. If you can walk to your hotel, that's best. The cops really limit most traffic to accomodate the pedestrians. If you can't walk, then wait an hour or so (go have an ice cream) and take Metro. After an hour, it really lightens up on Metro. Do NOT drive into town. I work near the Mall, and driving home to Northern VA a couple of years ago took forever - about 1.5 - 2 hours. |
Thanks so much. Looks like I'll pack my walking shoes!
