Dayle - Estimated Driving Times

Sorry about the double post but forgot to enter a topic.

Dayle, I know you estimate the driving time from SLC to Moab as around 5 hours.

How about from Torrey back up to SLC. I'm thinking of adding a day and going to Capitol Reef. I wonder if the different route back to SLC will be faster?

Mapquest.com is saying 3 hours & 40 minutes.

You should check our mapquest.com We use it all the time when planning trips.

I do check Mapquest. However, Dayle has a much better feel for the type of road, etc.

I'm not Dayle, but me putting in my 2 cents will bump the post!

My best guess would be closer to 4 1/2 hours. From Torrey taking Hwy 24 you have to slow down for a couple of the little cities along the way, Hwy 50 is a short cut that will save you about 65 miles and half an hour driving to I-15 and Hwy 50 is a nice drive.

I figure you are going to the SLC airport...so you have to drive all the way though town..so depending on commute traffic...it could even be longer.

Hi Myer,

The last time I did the drive straight from work (SLC), it was about 4 hours. I had to slow down for a snowstorm at the highest elevation.

Weather that first night was so windy, cold and rain/snow, that I bagged it and stayed in Austin's Chuckwagon hotel instead of camping! The next 2 nights were nice for camping (tent).

As long as you don't hit Provo during morning rush hour on a weekday, traffic shouldn't be a problem. You might want to check for road construction closer to your trip.

utahtea, Dayle Thanks.

What I'm really trying to do is convince myself to add a 6th day to my trip and spend most of that day at Capitol Reef NP.

Instead of leaving for SLC from Moab late in the afternnon of the 5th day I'd leave from Torrey late in the afternoon of the 6th day.

I'm planning on flying from SLC around noon time so even if I stay over en route, I'd still have plenty of time to get to the airport.

I'm just trying to determine which is faster to SLC. From Moab or Torrey.

Myer,

Neither way is very fast. You're on 2 lane roads most of the way for both with a handful of small towns (thye are small though so the low speed limits don't last too long)! Heading north on the return, you meet I-15 just a little further south coming from Torrey than you do from Moab.

It's really a toss up. If you have the chance to add a day of vacation - do it!

Thaks for the tips - we will be driving from Teasdale to SLC airport on a Sunday & from looking at Mapquest did not think it would take this long - so thanks again. I was wondering why Mapquest directs you on 28 instead of 50? Seems the shorter route to I15 makes the most sense.Any construction around SLC we should be aware of?

B,

Sorry, I'm not very great with the road numbers. I live here, so I just know where to go and how long it takes. Utahtea is the mapping guru.

No major construction I'm aware of on I15. Only north of SLC in the Ogden area where they are finally adding lanes.

Also construction on I-80 between I-15 and mouth of Parley's Canyon (to Park City), but that won't affect you.

Have a fun trip!

I checked and Hwy 28 would be 4 miles shorter but according to my Street and Trips software it would be 25 minutes longer to drive. We've never done Hwy 28 so I can't recommend it, but we have done Hwy 50 between I-70 and I-15 several times. The last time was just last year.

For what it' s worth-- on Sunday we drove from Torrey to SLC airport--Hwy 24 to 50 to I15 --took us about 4 hours. We left early morning- hardly any traffic on the 2 lane highways at that time.
