Day Trips from NYC via bus/train

Hello again!

I am interested in doing some day trips from NYC to leafy, green, spots with good hikes and walks. And safe for a solo female traveller. Any suggestions of places that are accessible via Greyhound, Amtrak, or Metro North? I'd be leaving from NYC.

Thanks again!

Plenty of Metro North opportunities, particularly up the Hudson.

gtrekker: you mentioned New Paltz, before. That's a beautiful place. In New Jersey, there is the Lambertville (or New Hope, Pa.) area. There is a train station in Lambertville, but I have no idea if trains even run there from NY. Many people do commute to NY, though, and there are also many New Yorkers who have weekend places there. Look on New Jersey transit for more info. If I find any info out, I'll post again.

You can take the Metro-North Hudson line to the "Breakneck Ridge" stop (right after Cold Springs). This stop lets you off basically right at the trailhead of the Breakneck Ridge hike. It will be really beautiful in about two weeks when the leaves peak. The first part of the hike (about 1.5 miles) is strenuous but the views are magnificent. It then becomes more moderate and you can hike about another four miles to an old fire tower.

You can usually buy the trail map at one of the sporting good stores in the city, i.e. Paragon, EMS, or Tent & Trails. It's the white trail on the "East Hudson Trails" map published by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference.

Another idea -- West Point/Garrison. You can do it via Metro-North. It's a beautiful spot on the Hudson and home to West Point, of course. You could join us this weekend for a home game, tailgating and the parade (think cute cadets!). LOL!
