The town of Cold Spring in upstate NY is beautiful! As is the town of Beacon nearby, which also is home to the Dia: Beacon art museum. It's a great art space. Both towns are easy to walk, good for antique shopping, and I had some great pulled pork and cornbread in Beacon at the Piggy Bank restaurant there. The towns are a station apart on MetroNorth - it's a lovely 2 hr (can't rem how long exactly) ride along the Hudson River pretty much all the way. I suppose you could drive too, but I really did love the train ride up. It's a leisurely day trip, very quaint and relaxing.

You could drive up the Hudson to Hyde Park to visit the FDR home and museum, the Vanderbilt mansion and eat at the Culinary Institute of America.

I'd go to Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate and perhaps try to get a dinner reservation at Blue Hill Stone Barns.

All thne suggestions so far are good ones. The question is: What kind of shopping?

You could do all that Hudson Valley stuff, and when you're done in Hyde Park, keep going up to Rhinebeck. Very nice small town with a couple of terrific restaurants and cute shops, etc.

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful suggestions. We drove to Tarrytown and had lunch at The Castle on the Hudson . The castle and the property are beautiful but I must say the service at the restaurant,Equus, was exrtremely slow. Lunch starts at 12 and we did not have appetizers ,coffee or desert and two hours were gone. We had a delicious lunch but were anxious to move on
