The town of Cold Spring in upstate NY is beautiful! As is the town of Beacon nearby, which also is home to the Dia: Beacon art museum. It's a great art space. Both towns are easy to walk, good for antique shopping, and I had some great pulled pork and cornbread in Beacon at the Piggy Bank restaurant there. The towns are a station apart on MetroNorth - it's a lovely 2 hr (can't rem how long exactly) ride along the Hudson River pretty much all the way. I suppose you could drive too, but I really did love the train ride up. It's a leisurely day trip, very quaint and relaxing.

I'd go to Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate and perhaps try to get a dinner reservation at Blue Hill Stone Barns.

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful suggestions. We drove to Tarrytown and had lunch at The Castle on the Hudson . The castle and the property are beautiful but I must say the service at the restaurant,Equus, was exrtremely slow. Lunch starts at 12 and we did not have appetizers ,coffee or desert and two hours were gone. We had a delicious lunch but were anxious to move on
