Day trips from Hilton Head?

I'm looking to take my girlfriend to Hilton Head for a 4-day long weekend or so, where we will be staying with friends. I plan on taking a day trip to Savannah, but was wondering if anyone could suggest other day trips out of HH. We're not too interested in the golf/beach resort scene, just looking for historic/cultural things to see and if possible, fun nightspots geared toward 20-somethings. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Oops, I forgot - any can't-miss restaurants as well (we love seafood).

Derek:

Can't help you with 20-somethings nightspots, but you may want to check out the small town of Beaufort about 45 minutes to an hour North of HH--lot's of well-preserved homes on the waterfront. Sleepy little town, but may be worth a look for you.

Also, if you're staying in Sea Pines (which takes up most of the eastern end of the island), you may want to consider renting bikes as there are great trails/sidewalks with little real traffic. We actually saw deer one morning riding to Harbor Town. Alternatively, there are several boat/kayak trips that venture into the low country waterways around HH.

Finally, there are lots of great seafood restaurants, but I think the Sunset Cafe is a neat place--very casual, overlooks a waterway & marina, and has much better & creative seafood than you would think as you drive past the RV/campground to get to it. Best at sunset, as the main room faces West.

Have fun!

I agree with the posting on Beaufort, a lovely city to spend the day, many nice waterfront restaurants. Stop at Parris Island on the way.
Daufuskie Island ferry trips are available, this used to be totally undeveloped and slave descendents lived on the island and took you on the land portion of the tour. It is an interesting trip.
Charleston is a gorgeous city but about a 2 hour drive.
You will love Savannah, the Pirate house restaurant is full of history. Take a bus or carriage tour of the city.

Thanks for the advice. :) I'll definitely check out Beaufort one of the days.

We did a trip of about same length and one day took a nice sailboat ride. Originally we'd planned to do the Stars'n Stripes (former racer) but it wasn't running tourist trips that week. It was a fabulous way to spend the afternoon. We also loved Beaufort. It was horribly hot and humid the day we were there, but lovely still.
