Day trips from Boston via public transport?

Hi,

Is it possible to take day trips from Boston by public transport? Where to and how?

Any special events this weekend? Oct 13-14.

Thanks.

Boston is the largest city and hub of the New England states, so you can go to lots of places from there.

Taking the commuter trains, you get go NE to Salem/Gloucester/Rockport. You can go SE to Plymouth. You can go SW to Providence.

And buses to everywhere, including Cape Cod. Or the casinos in Connecticut.

[There's a passenger ferry to Provincetown on Cape Cod from May to Oct 1; too late for you.]

But keep in mind that the commuter trains run at much reduced schedule on weekends. Check www.mbta.com for info.

Oh, actually the P-town ferries will still be running this weekend:

You can take the bus to Cape Cod but check to see which stops actually stop in town. Many of the stops are at highway rest stops.

You can get to Cambridge (Harvard Square, harvard Yard and museums, MIT) via the red line on the T

The Adams National Historic site in Quincy can be reached via the red line in the other direction

You can take the commuter rail (Acton/Fitchburg line) from North Station to Concord. From the train station in Concord, it's a short walk to the center of town. From there, there is a shuttle, the Liberty Ride, that will take you throughout Concord and Lexington with stops at all of the historic places. You can get more information on this link http://www.libertyride.us/libertyride.html. The train ride to Concord on a weekend is about an hour.
