Day trips from Boston
 

Im looking for day trips advice from Boston NOT using car hire

1.Whats the best way (not car hire) of getting from Boston to Concord

2. Also Boston to Salem.

2. Is it possible to do a day trip Boston to Mashantucket Pequot reservation or would I have to stay nearby such as Hartford instead.

3. Same as above Boston to Plimouth plantation or how do I arrange a day trip

There is the commuter rail to Salem - and I think a seasonal water ferry.

Concord is a little more difficult - also a commuter rail, but if you want to do the Revolutionary War Lexington/Concord thing commuter rail isn't going to do it for you.

Plimouth Plantation is somewhere in between in ease of public transit. There really is not a Reservation that I know of other than the 2 gambling casinos (Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun). If that is what you are interested in, there are buses you can buy a seat on to take you to/from for a day trip.

Viator and other tour companies have day bus trips to all of your places. (maybe not the casinos, but I see buses all the time picking up people for day trips - probably easy to find on internet search - it is about a 2-hour ride)

Uber is working well in Boston suburbs - so that is another option for transportation to Salem or Lexington/Concord - they are really not that far in miles or driving time, just more challenging on public transit as that will not drop you near enough to tourist areas or runs on a limited schedule outside commuter hours

I saw the Salem ferry come into Boston last week, near Quincy Mkt area.
I have seen a bus heading south to Plymouth but Plimouth Plantation is outside of town.

The Salem ferry runs until the end of October. It is more expensive than the commuter rail train but many take the ferry one way and the train the other for a different experience. It's easy once you get to Salem by either mode to walk to the sights. The commuter rail train leaves from North Station. Buy your ticket in before getting on the train. The Liberty Ride, a hop on hop off trolley, runs through Concord and Lexington until the end of October. It goes to all the sights in the two towns. You can get to Lexington by taking the Red Line to Alewife, and a bus to Lexington. The Commuter Rail also runs to Concord but the station is not as close to the sights and you need transportation to get the most out of your visit. http://www.libertyride.us/libertyride.html#2

@seanhodgson The Mashantucket Pequot reservation is over 100 miles from Boston. It's also not at all close to Hartford. However, the only thing to see there is a museum. Are you going to visit the giant Foxwoods casino? If so, then there are casino buses; otherwise, you can't get there by public transportation and would have to drive. Most of these are day trips, leaving very early in the morning and returning in the evening. I think there may be overnight options as well, but you would want to stay at one of the Foxwoods hotels; you absolutely would not want to stay in Hartford.

I really know nothing about it, just that it's hard to get around out there (Lexington/Concord) without a car.
