day trip to Gulfport

Is this a good daytrip from New Orleans? I'm looking for possible beach time, someplace that feels a little different, a taste of Missisippi.

If I remember correctly, the water in that region is really dirty. Dark brown dirty.
So if you go, try not to "taste" it if you can!

Anyone from Mississippi will tell you you haven't been to MS if you've only been to the Gulf Coast. That may be good or bad, depending on your perspective.

Yes, the water is dirty. I would not swim in it. The Mississippi River dumps into the Gulf too close to the MS coast. Look but don't touch.

If you want beach time I would by-pass Gulfport and take the auto ferry across Mobile Bay. There are forts that saw action in the Civil War on either side of the bay entrance. Gulf State Park in Alabama has a great beach (as does almost any part of the coast going east from there). It would be a long day trip but worth it. If you stay overnight you could check out Mobile and go on to Pensacola.

My daughter has lived in Biloxi for 10 years..just a few blocks from the beach. She might 'lay-out' on their beaches but for a "swim" day, they head for Mobile or better yet, the Florida panhandle.
