Day trip to Everglades from Sanibel

My wife and I (no kids) are visiting Sanibel next week (Wed - Monday). We'd like to take a day trip to the Everglades one of these days. We will have a rental car.

Should we hire a tour guide? What part should we see, etc? Is one day better than the other to avoid crowds?

Just looking for general advice and suggestions.

Thanks!

Either drive down to Everglades City to the National Park VC and take the boat trip with the ranger out through the mangrove islands in the gulf, or drive over to the VC at Shark river and take the tour the park service does there. Go to www.nps.gov and click on Florida then Everglades for directions and more information.

Agree with emalloy's post ... Shark Valley is pretty nice, with the 17 mile loop on the tram and the observation tower. If it's not TOO hot and humid you can rent a bike and pedal it too.

Do I need to register for the ranger led tours in advance, or is this 'first come first served'?

Is the Everglades more crowded on the weekend?
