Day Trip Maui to Neighboring Island

87 Days until Paradise. 15 Days on Maui-15th Anniversary. We would like to take a day trip and tour to one of the neighbor islands. Ideally, leave OGG early - hook up with a good van tour - return OGG in the evening.
Anybody been there/done that and recommend tour operators, island, any advice at all appreciated.

Why not make your recommendations here, where they can benefit others as well? This is a common question asked on boards and unless you are selling something, why not share your info?

I'd recommend a day trip to Lanai. There's a daily ferry that will take you to the island. You can rent a jeep and explore all day (petroglyphs, Garden of the gods, shipwreck beach, etc.. Check out http://lanai.aloha-hawaii.com/

Trilogy takes a catamaran to Lanai where you can spend part of the day snorkeling and part on a van tour of the town there. They also serve lunch and will take people out in a small boat to look at the spinner dophins. Then it's a sunset sail back! The ride back can be pretty exciting - like a small roller coaster. Didn't bother me so much that I couldn't enjoy the champagne they served but our seven year old became ill...

I would definately limit my choices to Lanai or Molokai, and consider water transportation, or west maui airport.

Why limit to Lanai or Molokai when you can get to Oahu and the Big Island just as quick (but not as cheaply)?
