day trip from Washington

We will be visiting Washington in October and would like to take a day trip. Suggestions would be much appreciated.

What are your interests - history, museums, outdoors activities,...? Within 21/2 hours you could be at Colonail Williamsburg to the south, the Amish country to the north, Luray Caverns to the southwest, the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

All good ideas from alvira, and to add to it, if you want things a little closer - the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Annapolis, or even just a quick 20 minutes to Old Town, Alexandria.

Do you have kids? There is 6 Flags America, Hershey Pennsylvania..

There's a 6 Flags on the outskirts of DC in Maryland.

Annapolis is very nice -- schedule a tour of the Naval Academy, and walk around the downtown area. ((b))

There's also Fredericksburg, Manassas, Ellicott City, Richmond. Or maybe a MARC train to Harpers Ferry?

Oh yes, and closer: Mt Vernon

Mt. Vernon definitely, you don't even need a car to get there and on a nice autumn day the leaves might even be changing depending on the time of the month.
