Day trip from Oahu to Big Island for Volcanoes
I am taking my mother to Hawaii in Nov and since she has never been there, am trying to cram as much sightseeing in as possible and won't be doing much beach time. I don't have much vacation time so are planning 3 full days on Kauai & 4 full days in Maui. Planning on staying in Oahu long enough to see Pearl Harbor & now the big question...Is there any day trip of any kind from Oahu to the Big Island to see Volcanoes Natl. Park or do we need to fly there overnight on our way to Kauai. I've been there before, & since she will probably never make it back again, I hate for her to miss seeing the live volcano & would like to do a helicopter tour. Is this feasible to just stay overnight in Oahu & do the volcano thing from Oahu, stop over on our way to Kauai, or just chuck the whole idea. Help!!

Hi Cheryl -
A day trip from Oahu to Volcanos Nat'l Park is do-able, albeit ambitious. My husband and I did a similar day trip from Kauai, which is actually more involved because there are no non-stops from Kauai to Hilo, so your itinerary can be done with much more ease. However, doing both the park AND a helicopter ride may be pushing it. I guess it depends on how much time you want to spend at the park. We spent the entire day there, as there is much to see. You can always ask the concierge at your hotel in Oahu about making such a trip, or even call them in advance to get their take on it. Good luck, and I hope it works out for you to get it all in!

My husband and I (late 50's), active Aussies, took the tour from Honolulu to see the Volcano, year before last.
There was a lot of waiting around the two airports, it poured rain a lot of the time, and the lava, which had been flowing into the sea for 14 years, stopped doing so the night before!!!!
Still, it was worth it, but next time we would hire a car on Hawaii and do it ourselves. I dont want to spend an hour looking at the shop at a macadamia plantation, I'd rather have that hour at the crater.
Happy travels.

Cheryl,
My boyfriend and I are staying in Oahu for nine days in May and I was wondering about day tours to other islands also. Roberts Hawaii does have tours from Oahu to the Big Island and does do a Volcano tour. They also do trips to Kauai and have other itineraries for the Big Island. Check them out at www.robertshawaii.com Good luck.
