Day or overnight train from Paris to Venice?

Our family of four (2 older teenagers) will be taking the train from Paris to Venice in December. I had intended to take the overnight train (4 berth couchette) to save a night's accomodation and a day's sightseeing. A friend has suggested that it would be a very scenic train trip through the mountains and that we consider a day trip. I think I wouldn't sleep well anyway on the train and am leaning towards going in daylight. Does anyone have any experience of this or advice?

I'm very grateful for all the terrific advice I've has so far - have recommended this site to several travelling friends.

We took the overnight train from Rome to Paris -- 2 adults - 1 teen and I must say it is a real unique experience. We took a 8 hour train ride from Vienna to Venice -- during the day and it was a very long day. The teen read her book -- the scenery was nice but after a while -- you really don't notice it.

If you take the overnight train -- request early check-in at your destination -- we were able to check in early in Paris -- then refresh ourselves and then using our same day rail pass -- took a train down and back to Verailles -- a very full day. In regards to the overnight -- you need to make sure that the correct day/night is checked off -- if you are using a 3-4 day rail passes. Of course, you need to reserve your berths.

I slept fine, other than 1-2 times during the night when they added - deleted cars and the train jolted a bit.
I say go for the night train -- a real Europeon experience.
