Day drives out of New Orleans
 

This is our second time to NOLA, last time we rented a car toured all the plantation houses. This time were thinking of headed down to the coast, just to see some beautiful countryside, isn't that where the Cajun country is? Would appreciate any recommendations and opinions on which way we should head for the day.<BR>Thank-you <BR>Mike

Take a swamp boat tour out of the area south of NOLA (is it the Houma area?) for some beautiful scenery and usually a funny Cajun tour guide. Real Cajun company, though, is more near Lafayette.

Mike - I just came back from New Orleans. We took a day drive to Alabama (just to get a couple more states under our belts - and to see what the heck was out that way!). My favorite part of the drive was along Route 90 (?) which is the &quot;scenic route&quot; along the coast. The western part of this route (western Mississippi, about an hour outside NO) was quite pretty. There is a nice town called Pass Christian, where one side of the street is beautiful mansions and the other side is the beach. We saw the most incredible sunset there! I don't know much about what to do around there (because we just drove all day) but there was a visitor center on Rt. 90 right off of I-10 where the people were friendly and gave us a map of the scenic route...there were tons of brochures at the center advertising places to visit in the area.

I agree - take a swamp tour. There are groups providing tours all over the area just southwest of New Orleans, Lafeyette(sp?) area. You can drive along the road, stop at a few, and pick the best priced one.<BR><BR>Be sure to get a regular boat, not an airboat -- too noisy, not as much fun since the guide cannot tell you stories the whole way over all the noise.<BR><BR>I also agree the Pass Christian area is a nice drive.

Thanks everyone. Were definitely planning to do the swamp tour this time. And driving to Alabama sounds like a great idea we've never been there.

Consider visiting Avery Island &amp; eating at Mulate's in Breaux Bridge. Also, south of NO to the Barataria Preserve - eat at Restaurant des Familles for an awesome experience - food is great &amp; the view is heavenly! St Francisville is beautiful, as is Nacthitoches, north of Alexandria. I agree - Pass Christian is a beautiful town &amp; that drive would be lovely too. Have a great time...we'll be there in a May for Jazz Fest - can't wait!

Mike - Don't know if you are interested in gambling, but it is an easy drive over to all the casinos in Biloxi MS. The Beau Rivage is GREAT.
