Thank you everyone. Lots of restaurants to try. Now to decide on area in which to rent, then to drive on Hwy 1 a bit for scenery, and Carmel beach and Patty's itenary tips and we are set. Can't wait.

Best case, depending on time of day.

Unless I'm having a senior moment, it's the closest major airport.

Apparently a number of airlines fly into Monterey from Des Moines(?) with a change, or changes.

Yes, San Jose is the closest major airport followed by Oakland or San Francisco. Monterey airport is tiny and may cost more and/or require more connections depending on where you're coming from.

So probably fly into San Jose, much cheaper. Is there a specific pretty area to stay at? Still haven't booked.

Are we still talking about staying in Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel? Sorry if I missed it above (it's been a while), when is this trip?

Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel are all picturesque. Don't stay in Seaside. Are you still wanting an airbnb? If so, look in Pacific Grove.

We spent a night in Pacific Grove on a trip down Highway 1. It seemed like a really neat place that would be fun to use as a base.

I liked staying in Monterey, Carmel is too chi-chi and precious for me, just not as much a regular city/town. There's nothing to do there, anyway, there are some things you can do in Monterey itself. I'm not a fan of cities just for rich people. That may be what you are looking for, however, things like expensive art galleries and spas.

I really liked the Hotel Pacific in Monterey, all rooms are suites so you get a fireplace and private balcony or patio. It also has a covered parking garage, although that costs extra. But it's very convenient if you have a car.
