DanTravel Insurance

Has anyone ever had to use their evacuation insurance with this company. I have seen the posts on this site but no one seems to have actually had occasion to use it. Hesitating in making the purchase without this type of anacdotal information. Your actual experiences with Dan would be appreciated. Mildred |

Mildred, While we have never (thankfully) had to use the insurance, DAN is a very reputable dive organization. Try posting your question on the Caribbean board or on one of the dive site bulletin boards where you might have better luck connecting with divers.

TC thanks for the response. Would not be using it as dive insurance as much as general evacuation for solo trips. Read on their site that this is possible seemingly world wide. Still not confortable with reputation rather than experience. When did I become such a chicken? Mildred

Mildred, a friend of mine did have to use the evacuation insurance after a dive accident. The DAN people arranged a helicopter which met them at the dock in Beaufort, NC and transported him to Duke Hospital in Durham. They were completely helpful and right on top of providing for him.
Sadly, my friend did not survive the accident, but his family was uniform in their praise of DAN's performance. |
I was reading an article about evacuation insurance recently and learned the important question to ask is who decides when someone needs to be evacuated. The patient? The patient's family? The medical facility? The insurance company? Could make a difference.

Back when I was in a scuba club, members from DAN would come and talk to the group every now and again (DAN headquarters are in Durham). They had some interesting stories about people calling in about the evac. insurance and wondering when coverage would start. The people calling were hoping for about 3 minutes or less.
If you call the help line you'll get to talk with a trained nurse/parametic. Most of the training is with dive-related injuries, but as they said at one meeting, according to their statistics, the worst accident scuba diving is dropping the weight belt on your foot. So I do have a bias about DAN but I would recommend them. |
Mildred, If you're not a diver and just want evacuation, take a look at Med Jet service.

cmcfong -Thank you for sharing a painful memory.
betsy- what you read is exactly why I am asking my questions. ncgrrl - thanks for your info. Thanks to all - still investigating, |
You can compare premiums and coverage terms from several different Medical Evacuation Policy providers at www.insuremytrip.com
Personally I have a Med-Jet policy and have been fortunate never to have needed it (but glad to know it's there if I do). |
Sunnyboy - Although more money than Dan, this site seems to be what I have been looking for. Appreciate your response. Mildred
