We are a very recently retired couple who would like a little getaway this winter from the cold, snowy north. I found a lovely condo in Dana Poin, Californiat. We have never been to southern California and are wondering what the experts think. We would use it for a base to see Los Angeles and the area south of LA. We want to just relax, walk on the cold beach, and get away from the snow. We also have some family we will visit in Laguna Beach.
Does Dana Point sound like a good spot for those who have been there? (The condo is gorgeous and a good price.)

Yes! We have had the pleasure of staying at The Ritz Laguna Niguel, which I believe is Dana Point. It is gorgeous there.

You are a good drive to places further north on the coast, like Malibu. Santa Monica could be a day-trip, if you time the drive right.

Yes, lived in Orange County for 13 years - love Dana Point. It can be cold in the winter (I mean not like snowy but not like tropical). There is a lovely harbor I use to walk around...enjoy!!! Get to San Diego ... far better than L.A. ;-)

Dana Point would make a great holiday getaway! The weather is cool, but like Momddtravel2 said it's not snowy...just don't expect to lounge on the beach every day. Dana Point harbor offers great restaurants and if you're planning your trip in December try to catch the boat parade. Many restaurants will stay open later and you can view the parade from their patio's (Check the Wind-n-Sea and Proud Mary's). Proud Mary's is also a must-see for breakfast; try the Captain Jack or BLT.

Laguna Beach is about 15 miles up the coast and if you take PCH the whole way it has incredible views. They usually have a winter themed arts fair at the Sawdust which might be a fun activity with your friends. On the way to Laguna you will also pass the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel which is always a fun place to grab lunch; they also do an incredible tree lighting for the holiday season.

The drive to San Diego can often be tedious but the city is worth a stop. Look into grabbing the Amtrak Surfliner (approx $20-$40 per ticket); it leaves from San Clemente (about 10 miles south of Dana Point) and can take your right into the downtown Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego. Train takes about an hour but you get to sit back, relax and enjoy the views. You can also grab the trolly from the train station in San Diego if your looking to get to a specific destination ($7 gets you an all day pass)

yes, if you got a good deal, go for it. laguna beach is close by and lovely. if you want to do day trips, i'd focus on heading south as there is less traffic. i'd go from san diego to laguna beach often for afternoon trips. even palm springs is only a little over 2 hours away if you want to get into the desert.

I live in San Diego, and frequently take out-of-town visitors to the Laguna Beach/Dana Point area. I think it is a good place to base yourselves. Dana Point Harbor is lovely. Catalina Island is close by. San Diego and LA are only about 1 hour, 15 minutes in either direction.

Laguna Beach can be really crowded and hectic in summer, much less so in winter. Weather is usually in the low 60s in winter. I think you will really enjoy it.

I agree with all the raves. I lived for 17 years just 5 miles from the Dana Point Marina and was there quite often. If you like to walk, the paths around the Marina are great and there is also a grassy park and sandy beach at the north end.

Re: AMTRAK. My preference is to depart from San Juan Capistrano rather than San Clemente. They are about the same distance from from Dana Point and the San Juan train station is just across the street from Mission SJC. From the train car, you also have an elevated view of the beaches and ocean north of San Clemente you won't have if you are in a car going to San Clemente. Parking is easier at San Juan also.
