Dallas/Grapevine with kids

I'll be travelling to Grapevine Texas with 3 kids real soon. I was wondering about things in Fair Park to do. Are there any rides open? What else is in the Dallas/Fort Worth areas that kids (ages 7,8,9) would enjoy? Thanks for any information.

Tarantula train goes from Grapevine to Stockyards in Fort Worth. The Stockyards is an interesting (if touristy) place but they do have a cattle drive every day down the main street at 11:30 am and 4 pm. There are cowboys along the route with their horses. You can get up close and personal. With the cattle, too.

There is also a Texas Size Human Maze ($3.25 under 12). For something extra, go to downtown Fort Worth and see the buildings that were hit by a tornado a few weeks ago -- still boarded up.

Incidentally, the Fort Worth Stockyards is a National Historic District with a visitor center. Oh, yes, an amusement park but don't know if it operates during the week.

Fair Park has the Science Place (and IMAX), museum of natural history, and railroad museum. Your kids may be too young, but have you seen the Sixth Floor museum related to the Kennedy assassination?

Zoo in Fort Worth is supposed to be better than the one in Dallas, but we haven't been there.

When you get to Grapevine, see if you can find a Friday "Guide" from the Dallas Morning News.

Check out guidelive.com for things to do in Dallas area--on-line guide for Dallas Morning News. People like the cattle drive statues near the convention center, Imax theater at Fair Park Science Place. Most Fair Park rides are not open all the time but there is plenty to see and do.

Fair Park only has rides during the State Fair, which is in September/October. Sorry that you'll miss it, as the Fair is a lot of fun.

Fair Park does have a really good science museum, The Science Place, and an IMAX theatre that your kids would enjoy. They have various films that show there every day. Check the Morning News Guide for details. There are also the Dallas Museum of Natural History, the Hall of State, and the Dallas Aquarium down there, too. The Titanic Artifact Exhibit is on until June 4th at Fair Park, too.

In downtown, the Dallas World Aquarium is GREAT! They have penguins, panthers, sharks, etc... It is by the West End area of town, which has lots of restaurants of all kinds.

Both Dallas and Fort Worth have very good zoos. Fort Worth's is better, IMHO.

If you have not already been to Fort Worth here are some suggestions:

Fort Worth Science History Museum/Omni Theatre:

The Dino dig is favorite - kids can dig for dinosaur bones, they also have a planetarium and always a hands on exhibit and it is very reasonable.

If you are ever here during May - take them to Mayfest on the trinity river in Fort Worth - there are tons of things for kids that are free - also you can ride the train to the zoo and back to the festival.

Water Parks:
Chisolm Park - Bedford 1.00
This is a city park/pool but it has slides similar to a water park and very reasonable.

NRH20, Hurrican Harbour

GAmes:

Gameworks at Grapevine Mills mall is a lot of fun - there is a little bit of everything there for all ages.

Fort Worth Stockyards:

They have a rodeo I believe every weekend, and shootouts in the evenings etc.

American Airlines Museum - Arlington
This museum is great for kids - everything is hands on and they also have an Omni Film - it is near the airport - free

DART - You can catch the DART train and take them into Dallas - go to the aquarium etc. downtown Dallas.

Look up the Fort Worth STar Telegram or Dallas Morning News in the internet and they have a guide every friday that tells you what there is to do in the metroplex...

Being a resident of the adjacent town, I can tell you this. The Tarantula Train has crashed 3 times in the last 8 months. Secondly, Fair Park is okay, but its a typical school field trip and kids will want more. However the omni theater is spectacular if you enjoy heights and all that upclose and personal picture screen in your face.

I live in Flower Mound. A community bordering on Grapevine. There is Grapevine Mills Mall, Gameworks, a virtual reality haven for kids, just bring plenty of money. Fair Park is only open in October during the State Fair. Six Flags is only 20 minutes from Grapevine in Arlington. Hurrican Harbor is also in Arlington, it is a water park. Pretty nice. The Ballpark at Arlington is a beautiful ballpark and is worth catching a baseball game one evening. Its not too bad as far as the heat right now. Only in low 90's during the day, it would be a great evening plan.

In the Grapevine Mills Mall there is an ice skating rink too. That is always fun.

Medieval Times is on Interstate 35N in Dallas, just 20 minutes from Grapevine as well. It is a little pricy but kids will enjoy the show.

The Ft. Worth Zoo is a great zoo. The Dallas Aqua Zoo is also fun. I say Six Flags from the crack of dawn until sundown and you won't hear a peep out of them for at least 10 hours afterwards.
