HI ya'll, I went to SMU. Class of 77. My duaghter is a sr in high school and will probably apply to SMU, but since we now live in CA she will probably pick a CA university.

Peggy's Beef Bar is one of my favorites. Their fried onion rings may be the best ever. Also, how about NY Subway for take out grinders. Not like Subway, but like the real east coast grinders. Another GREAT place and old time fave is the Grape. It is also on Greenville. Serves wines by the glass (they did this before it was in), have a great cheeseboard selection you can put together from a choice of quite a few cheeses, and their cream of mushroom soup is legendary.

I hope she loves SMU. It really is a wonderful school. I was a history major there. Had a great time and a good education, to boot. Say Hi to Big D for me.

Mikemo, I'm not sure what to make of your post... No, I am not into 5-star restaurants, or paying $100 for wine with my dinner. Sorry.

Hi Mikemo and other SMU alums/ family...Thanks for the ideas near the SMU campus.
We leave next Saturday. What a fabulous University it is, I was there with her for Orientation 2 weeks ago and I was very impressed. Makes me want to go back to school!!!

CP, Nor am I, quite the opposite: I have been writing letters to restaurant owners and managers since 1971:
My biggest peeve is wine lists with unimaginative, commercially available wine selections priced at three or more times retail.
I have been crusading for 1 1/2 to at most two times retail for restaurant wines my entire adult life.
Further, each time I return from Europe or Central MX, for months I refuse to pay "premium" prices for less than the very best food/service here in D.
As an example, Lola, which is our very fav here in D, is worth every cent. Their wine list has stuff most oenophiles would "kill for" for about 1 1/2 retail (those wines are usually allocated - maybe 2 or 3 cases to all of Texas) - Their older "treasures" are less price friendly.

Anne,
Their seriously best ever Venison, Veal loin and other winter stuff are not on the summer menu, but I'm sure you'll enjoy.
We're going tomorrow before leaving for San Miguel.

Mikemo

would you recommend the tasting menu or the prix fixe choices - we are not big eaters and the thought of 10 courses(even with small portions) is a tad overwhelming.

indie,
Both are stunning: the tasting menu consists of small, tapas-like portions.
We did the 15 course once and it was a bit much even over the nearly 3 hour event. We are not big eaters either.
I would check the seasonal on-line menus and see which you like.
Three courses from the reg menu is more than enough for us. We usually "share", so maybe split an appetizer, salad or dessert to taste the variety.
Enjoy!
