Dairy Free Dining?

I am traveling to DC and would love to find some good dairy-free dining. The easiest way to ensure this is by order vegan, but I do eat fish & meat -- just no dairy (not even hidden dairy, such as the milk in McDonalds fries). If you have any suggestions, that would be great. I'm staying in DuPont circle.

Thanks!

Another possibility is a non-dairy kosher restaurant.

Here is lengthy list of vegetarian restaurants in DC and metro VA and MD. It includes vegan options. There's a section devoted to Dupont Circle. Also check out Adams Morgan which is very near by. I didn't realize there were so many!

To avoid "hidden" dairy, simply tell the waiter that you're allergic to dairy, and you should be well taken care of. (I lived in DC for 12 years until 8 months ago and had a friend allergic to dairy and this is what she always did...so I know it works.)

My fave vegan place is Java Green which is accessible via the link obxgirl provided. But honestly, I don't think you'll have an issue dining at regular restaurants and communicating your health restriction. Even pizza places (like the most excellent Pizzeria Paradiso in Dupont) can accomodate non-dairy requests.

Hello birder, I can not tolerate any dairy products and I never have a problem in restaurants. Beanweb's comments are exactly what I do. Now I don't eat at fast food places but can't you get a salad at McDonald's instead of fries? Anyway, enjoy your time in DC.

I also have a good friend with a severe dairy allergy and she finds that Asian restaurants are often a good bet for avoiding dairy. Some yummy choices in that area are Malaysia Kopitiam and Mai Thai. Or a short metro hop away is Gallery Place / Chinatown, where you might check out Burma or Kanlaya. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Thanks everyone - I really appreciate the help! PS No, I don't eat at McDonald's very often - it was just to show that there's dairy everywhere unfortunately!
