D.C. on New Years Eve with kids

We're taking the family to D.C. for four nights, the last of which will be New Years Eve. Can anyone recommend a good place to take the kids on the last night? I know D.C. must have some good fireworks--is there a good place (either inside or outside) from which to watch them?

There are no fireworks in the District on New Year Eve. Instead, you should go to Old Town Alexandria for First Night Alexandria. First Night is a street festival that's alcohol free and kid friendly.

I think that Old Town one is the one you hear about most for kids. I don't really even like NY eve. Never heard of fireworks for NY eve anywhere, at least not in the US. They are pretty expensive.

NYC has fireworks on New Year's Eve - over Central Park - as well as the Ball Drop in Times Square - with more than a million people attending. Not sure where else has fireworks but I would be surprised if there weren't more places.

But it sounds like DC doesn't. And in any case how old are the kids - will they enjoy fireworks at midnight - or be tired and grumpy.
