Current New York theater picks
 

I'm soliciting suggestions for theater to propose to my group of friends who will be going to New York the weekend of February 11. Broadway or off-Broadway. We will be a group of six women and it is always a challenge getting us to agree on our picks. What has anyone liked recently?

I looked at the current Broadway banter thread and at least I know it won't be Spiderman.

It would help to know what yo have seen and enjoyed the most in the past.

The revival of La Cage Aux Folles is first-rate, and it is a real crowd pleaser.

There are something like 9 shows closing next Sunday and new shows don't start previews until Feb. 28. Assuming your trip dates aren't changeable, my picks would be

>Driving Miss Daisy with Vanessa Redgrave & James Earl Jones for the performances.
>La Cage
>Million Dollar Quartet
>Jersey Boys if you haven't seen it and don't mind paying
full price. (It's rarely discounted--but you can always try)
>Avenue Q if you haven't seen it (off b'way)
>Other Desert Cities (off b'way at Lincoln Center)

With six of us to please, it is much more useful for me to hear what people here have enjoyed recently than to try to tell you what we have all seen and enjoyed. I doubt I could do that for all of us in any event. And it sounds like there are somewhat limited choices for our dates (this could actually be a good thing).

If you're seeing several things, then I would include 'Love Loss and What I Wore' off bway and definitely very enjoyable for women.

Found this thread looking up your trip report to Barcelona. Small world!

The New York Idea - off Broadway in the West Village at the Lucille Lortel Theater is also set in the same time period (around 1900). Light and fun. Impossible for all of you not to love this one.

Mistakes Were Made - At the Barrow Street Theater in the W. Village. A one man show about how a theater producer tries to get a show together. Reviews were not great but I laughed hard which is not usual for me.

I am not a musicals person but seems you have lots of suggestions for those above.

If you can swing getting tickets to Merchant of Venice it's worth every penny!!!!!

If you're interested in Opera, you can get standing room tickets at the Met the day of performance at the box office for cheap then slide into unoccupied seats during a break.

Skip A Small Fire and Blood From a Stone.

I saw the original La Cage and never thought any "revival" could be as good (and please, FORGET about that absolute disaster Robin Williams movie) but the current NY production is GREAT fun and well worth seeing IMO. As good, and perhaps in a few ways "better" than the original.

Fortunately, we saw it the night before we saw Spiderman with its absolutely spectacular sets, whiny teenagers, and great flying (when they don't crash and burn).

Memphis was fabulous.

We have purchased tickets for two shows, La Cage Aux Folles and The Whipping Man, based on much discussion (you should see how long it can take us to figure out where to go to dinner, and we've been having these conversations for forty years), discount seat availability, and whether the moon is in Aquarius.

Wish I had more time in New York, I'd like to try out more of these.

Goldie, I used to do the standing room thing at the Met in high school, grabbing the seats that people left at intermission. Glad to hear there are still those who do it, but it won't be me.
