Currency Exchange in NYC

I'm going to Paris at the end of the month. I'm also going to NYC tomorrow so I thought it may be cheaper to get euro's there than at home. I'll be in the area of 34th to 54th along broadway, 8th and 9th. Is Travelex any good? Any recommendation for a currency exchange would be appreciated. Thanks!

Most "experts" on the European forum suggest people wait until they get to their destination to exchange currency. They suggest you get a little bit of "local currency" when you arrive at the airport (so you'll have money for cab fare and tips then use an ATM card at near-by banks during your stay to withdraw local currency. That way you are not carrying too much cash and you generally will get the best exchange rates.

The prevailing wisdom on these boards (and there's lots of conversation along these lines in the Europe forum) is that the most economical way to get foreign currency is to withdraw it from an ATM when you get there.

Ooops - simultaneous post!

I agree - I was only planning on exchanging about $100. But for that $100, I thought I would ask for recommendations.

some of the american express offices do it. check their website.

Why make a special stop? For only $100 you can change right in the airport while you're waiting for your flight to board - and rate in NYC won't be any better.

Bank of America in Charlotte did it without a fee in April. If they have to order it from the bank in the area-such as mine N. Myrtle Beach then there is a shipping fee. I also like to have some cash on hand without having to do the ATM in an airport or in the location where I am traveling.

Agree with nytraveler. JFK is your best bet.

Many branches of Chase Bank will exchange for you. There are possibilities in NY around Rock Center..sorry I cannot be more specific..I get about 100 at Chase if I have none left over.
