CTA Question - White Sox game

I'm looking to head to Chicago on a Sunday afternoon for a White Sox game at Comiskey - I am driving in from the South. I have two options -
Pay $17 to the cash lot or take either the orange lot from Midway airport or the Green Line from the new Garfield park and ride off the Dan Ryan. (which is more cost effective)

Has anyone been to the new Garfield park and Ride - and also - does the greyhound terminal at 95th street have access to the Red Line -

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

$17 sounds like bad information. I have never paid that much at the official lots.

Secondly it is no longer Comiskey. I is now US Cellular field. Us locals just refer to it is as the Cell. By the way that is no reflection on the park itself or the food.

OK, I get an "F" for grammar on that last post. Should have proof read a bit on that baby.

HJflor is right-it's $17 to park in an official lot and to those of us who hold the Sox near and dear, we still call it Comisky and refuse to acknowledge the name change! I believe the Greyhound stop on 95th is very close to the Redline which runs directly up the Ryan. For either the Orange Line or Green you are going to have to change to the Red line. I'm not familiar with the Garfield Park lot.

hjflor,

Sorry to say it is indeed $17 to park at the Cell now. It went up at the end of last year actually. Still not as bad as at that other park. It costs us more for parking than it does for tickets most nights.

But I am sorry to say that I can not answer your questions in a satisfying manner, wish I could- have wished so for many, many years. No, I do not think that the red line has access to the greyhound terminal- as the red line runs far east. I could be wrong, as I am not sure where on 95th St. it is. The crime rate has to be a factor in your thinking. Also taking the orange line from Midway to downtown and then the red line North will leave you still having to park at Midway. UGH! $$ as bad or worse PLUS time consuming.

Come in off the Dan Ryan and exit at 31st St.or 35th St. and pay to park. One of the reasons why a million White Sox fans listen and don't go- as access from the South or SW is terrible.

What you CAN do is take the Metra train from any Metra S or SW suburb to downtown and then take the red line North from downtown. I just took the Metra last month a couple of times, went by the Cell and waved- there is no stop or platform. Does that tell you something?

The truth of the matter, no matter who
flames, is that much of the area you think you can commute through easily is not easily commutable. We should make a song out of that. The area of the Cell is getting better and better, IIT and also a lot of the lakefront going South. And several areas are being gentrified, but SOUTH or some areas West of the Cell at various distances are iffy. For instance this last weekend was "hot time in the city."

A tourist from IND got shot one block from Taste going into the el- total bystander and it could happen to anyone and he is ok. BUT there were at least 4 other shootings that Sunday alone. One was at 52nd & Trumball. You have to know the neighborhoods pretty well and stay with the fans and crowds. One 53 year old had a slight stroke, road off the Dan Ryan and went East a couple of years ago and was beaten to a pulp by a crowd. He remains brain dead to this day on a ventilator. There are all kinds of things going on that you do not want to know about. Gangs and drive bys are not something you want to be next to just to save a couple of dollars, IMHO.

Sorry if I didn't help you. As far as the new Garfield park & Ride- you do it and tell ME about it afterwards, ok?

We used to park in Bridgeport and walk, but you can't do that anymore as you will get ticketed big time or have your car towed. If I were you I would pay the parking. But if time is no factor and you really want to save a $$- I would take Metra to downtown and redline from downtown to the park. There is a platform from the red line.
And follow the crowd.

We go to the game all the time and we don't take tramping through some of the areas off the Dan Ryan lightly. I know from what I speak, as I was born at 52nd & Racine.

The last post isn't far wrong about some of the problems in Chicago, but I still think it's overstating the case. Chances are, you'll be fine. I visit various parts of the south side without any problems, but I have to admit, you do need to know where you're at. Neighborhoods can change quickly from one block to the next.

As for parking at Midway, it's only $1.75 at the CTA park and ride lot and you can transfer at Roosevelt to the Red Line. It's only a good option if you are coming up I-55 though. From I-94 it'll take way to long. As for the green line, I'm not familiar with any park and ride lots, though even if there is one, the green line doesn't stop anywhere near the Cell. If you're thinking of the red line, there definetly are no park and ride options.

If you're thinking of Greyhound, there is a stop at the 95th Station, but not all buses may stop there. That could be a good option. It's not the safest place in Chicago, but it's certainly not the worst either, and there are plenty of people around. I've been there during the day and have felt reasonably safe. Just stay alert and try not to look like you just arrived from a cornfield.

Not true about the Green Line! There is a stop right by IIT on 35th street, a few blocks East of the Red line. And it's a LOT less crowded than the Red line after games.

That said, I don't know where there's a park and ride lot on the South side--Maybe by Washington Park?

Today's paper, re the "park & ride" from Midway- which is statistically not
as bad as the others as far as personal safety goes. But there is an article that includes too much to relate but briefly- over this weekend the $1.75 park and ride people had their doors drilled, locks popped, all valuable contents taken, cd players/radios etc. in about 15 seconds per car. Average $400 taken or damage done to each vehicle this weekend. That was just the average, not the worst.

If anyone out there takes the Green line, where do you take it from and when do you take it? I would love to know your experience, and what you observe about the ride. Do you wait on platforms as on the Red line?

I've taken the Green line to downtown (live off Blue line, so transferred at Clark and Lake). Yes, it is above ground--the Green line follows the Loop rains and never goes underground.

Racy:

Did I laugh out loud when I read the CTA maps. What is now called the Green Line is the el I took from 63rd & Ashland (after two other bus transfers)to work downtown up and back every day from 1965-69.

They had it closed for a LOOOOONG time and it was caving in and its stations were in sorry shape. Now I see that it has been re-opened in a new incarnation and the stations have been rebuilt.
It only goes to 63rd St. regardless, and the drive to its terminus would be epic regardless of the parking situation anywhere near its stations- so it does less to help than the Red Line for me or any suburban W.Sox fan who lives in Will or Western Cook County, which is most of us.

These lines are way, way too far east to access for a great majority of the Sox fans who live in IL. It would take us longer to drive to them than to the game. The Red Line may be reachable for the IN fans who know where to park, but for 99% of them it would be almost silly since they would have to exit their expressways and go way out of their way regardless just to pay another fare.

Thanks, Racy. I had just studied the Metra maps and didn't look at the old CTA systems. All are way too short or too far east to help with this problem anyway, but its good to know.
