Thanks to all of you! You have given me many things to ponder I really appreciate the time that you each took to respond to my questions!
A specific hotel I saw: Phoenix Park Hotel - anyone know anything about this particular hotel?

A friend had out of towners to her wedding stay there and they all thought it nice. It's been a few years though so can't address it today other than it looks nice still from the outside. A popular bar, the Dubliner, is in the hotel. Good location maybe a block or so from Union Station and near the Postal Museum which people say is good.

While it is close to Union Station and the Mall, it is an area that becomes less convenient at night since there are fewer amenities.

Phoenix Park Hotel is a nice hotel and convenient to daytime sightseeing. As mentioned, the immediate area is not lively at night and has very little pedestrian traffic after dark. There is nothing in Union Station worth going to at night.

So...it's OK, nothing bad to say but I think a hotel near Dupont or Gallery Place will have more to offer in terms of dining and after-dark stuff.

yep, agree with bardo & Mike. Good 4 the day, but not as great for evening activities.
