Cruising into Vancouver--what documents needed?
 

We're cruising into Vancouver from Alaska and then flying from Vancouver to DFW.

When I was on the phone with AA redeeming FF miles, they said the name on the tickets had to be exactly like it is on our passports.

I didn't think U.S. citizens had to have a passport for Canada.

Anyone know? Thanks!

Connie, Canada is not another US state.

You'll have to go through Emigration and Customs like everywhere else. I don't know if you need passport, or ID and birth certificate will be enough.

Coming to USA from Canada you'll have to go through Emigration and Customs again.

at Air Canada counter and this is what I was told

Connie, you don't NEED a passport but it can make life easier. You will however need valid ID such as a Drivers License. There is now talk that those requirements will change for both Canadians and Americans, that passports will become a requirement but that has not happened yet. Have a great cruise!

The cruise line should tell you exactly what you need. Generally, to return to the US you need to bring a certified copy of your birth certificate and photo id if you don't have a passport. You can get away with less, but it has the potential of being a major hassle normally. On a cruise ship, they may go light on you.

You don;t need a passport for Canada yet - but will soon. But picture ID is not enough. You need that plus proof of citizenship (like a birth certificate) to get back in the US. But that is for air and road travel only.

However, my understanding is that all cruise ships with international stops now require passports for security purposes. So - in fact you MUST have one for this trip - I don;t think they'll let you on the ship without it.
