Cruise Stop in Charleston, S.C. - Suggestions?
 

We'll have from about 9am until 3:30 pm on a Monday at the end of October to see what we can of Charleston. First time in that city. I am planning to make lunch reservations at SNOB. Is a carriage ride worthwhile, or just too touristy? I would appreciate any suggestions that allow us to take 1.5 hours for lunch, enjoy what areas we can, and not run ourselves ragged.

Since you have limited time in town, I do think a carriage ride is a good way to get an overview of the city. I live here and recently took some friends visiting from Boston on a ride and they loved it. My personal favorite carriage company is Old South Carriage Co. (the folks with the red sash).

I'd take the carriage ride when you get into port as the tour will give you a good idea of places you may want to revisit. If you have time to visit a house, I love the Edmondston-Allston House. It is just down East Bay from SNOB so it would make a nice tour after your lunch.

Lunch at SNOB or Poogan's Porch would be my two choices.

I agree that the carriage ride would be a good way to see the city. Yes, it's touristy, but hey you're a tourist, right? Charleston loves you just the same. I have to disagree about Poogan's Porch. I think their food is a little shabby. I like Hank's much better although it may not be open for lunch. I don't know.

Sadly, Hank's is only open for dinner...I work just down from their and wish every day it was open for lunch. A definite must eat the next time you return to Charleston.

And 6 1/2 hours in Charleston
is much better than days in
other cities. ;)

I also think the carriage ride is a good idea, but the carriages vary their routes and you don't know which area you will cover ahead of time. Do the carriage ride and then walk to other areas you want to see.
