Cruise from Seward or Whittier?

After spending some time in Homer, we plan to take the ferry to Valdez. However, we definitely want to take a day cruise of Kenai Fiords. Should we take one from Seward or Whittier?

Since we're taking the ferry from Whittier, I'm debating if we also want to go to Seward which would probably involve an overnight there or do something from Whittier. But since this will be our only cruise of the area, does anyone have a suggestion or preference? Is there a big difference between tour companies? Any suggestions? Do we need reservations way in advance?

Thanks.

The Kenai Fjords cruises, on which you'll see the most marine and animal life, leave from Seward. I highly recommend the company Kenai Fjords Cruises over the others. Yes, you definitely need reservations in advance.

There's no telling what you'll see on the cruise from Whittier to Valdez. It's strictly for getting you to Valdez, not showing you the animals and sealife. If you want to have a much better chance of seeing orcas, porpoises, mountain goats, bears, bald eagles (you'll also see plenty of these in Homer), sea lions, sea otters, etc., I strongly suggest you take the six hour Kenai Fjords cruise.

I would second Celeste's opinion that you should do a 6-hour Kenai N.P. tour from Seward. Whether you need to reserve depends on when you are going. We went in May before the main tourist season started and the boat was quite empty which was great. We also went on the Valdez/Whittier ferry - again the boat wasn't full, and the trip turned into a wildlife-watching session - but again during the peak season it may be different.

How far in advance do you think I should make reservations for the 6-hr Kenai Fjord cruise ? My plan is sometime during the last 2 week in June which I gather is already high season.
