The drive to the visitor center is not bad at all. Rental car firms prohibit taking their cars on the Saddle Road (we did it anyway, as do many people). The road is better than many roads here in the DC area! If I recall correctly, it is about 1.5 hours one-way from the Hilton Wailoloa.
