Cricket in New York!!!
I am heading over from the UK to NY next weekend (10 and 11 Sept). I have to catch up on the Ashes whilst I'm there and I want to find a sports bar. I'm staying at the Waldorf Astoria so I need one nearby. However...and this is the tricky bit...I want a nice sports bar.
Any suggestions? |
I'm pretty sure that nobody in any sports bar in NYC has ever heard of cricket.
|
This was a fear of mine as well - that cricket isn't big in New York but who knows...
|
I was going to begin with a joke about there being a "Cricket in Times Square" (anyone else remember that story? I then decided to see if I could Google something.
If you type in televised cricket new york city you will get some sites that may be helpful. Someone writes of watching it at "Eight Mile Creek" an Australian restaurant downtown. There is also a New Yor Cricket Association with an e-mail address you might try for some info from a member. Give it a shot you may get some solid advice. |
I would imagine an english bar is your best bet in the same way as Irish bars show all the Gaelic Football and Hurling in the US.
Most Irish and english bars have Premiership Football so they may have the ashes. |
Eight Mile Creek is an Aussie rest/bar downtown that may show it. Here's their website
http://www.eightmilecreek.com/bar/index.htm The Red Lion in the Village at 151 Bleecker St. shows English football and rugby so may show cricket. Other places that show E. football are George Keeley on the Upper West Side, Nevada Smiths in the East Village and One on One also East Village. |

Becky's (1156 First Avenue, bet. 63rd and 64th) always shows Premier League football and are a great bet to show the Ashes.
They are a very nice bar and they also serve meals. I know for a fact they open at (to us) odd hours to show sporting events live. Call them at +1 212-317-8929 to find out. They have several screens, they may be willing to let you have a screen if they can get the matches on satelite. BTW, Cricket is huge in NYC.....with the Indo-Pak and Carribean folks, who mostly live in Brooklyn and Queens. If you are English you may not want to watch at an Aussie bar, for obvious reasons. You can walk to Becky's from the Waldorf on a nice day. |
With our ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, this may be presumptuous.
But if I were WonderWoman, an Aussie bar is precisely where I'd want to watch the match. Seeing grown men cry can be SO much fun... |
