Credit cards for cabs in Manhattan?

Do most cabs in NYC take credit cards. I've searched with 0 results.

Really, where did you search? It took me 10 seconds of googling to find this:

http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/pas...editcard.shtml

It looks legit to me.

Thank you so much. I searched only Fodors. Thanks for the super quick reply.

google is a better place to start. Then you can see if a legitimate (.gov, for example) source results. Not all questions of the universe can be answered on forums.

Most cabs take them now. And I know this ittational, but as s native NY'er I am skeptical of using credit cards in a cab.

I also do not use ATM machines that are on the street or in bars or retaurants. The Mafia for many years, and may still do, control the cigarette machines in the bars and restaurants, and I do not know who controls those machines.

All cabs are supposed to now accept credit cards, but the reality is that it's at best "most" and at worst "many". The real problem is that the card-swipe machine doesn't always work reliably.

Yep. I've been using them all week. I haven't had a problem yet.

The credit card in NYC taxis is very handy. Beware when the "tip" option comes up. On one cab it started at 25%. Decide what you want to type, and key it in. HTTY

Most cabs accept them, I think it is now a law. One thing to note is that sometimes if you don't give a tip, some drivers may "comment" and talk about having to cover the transaction costs of the credit card. So I normally give a small tip (beware of the automatic percentages!) you have the option of typing in the amount you want to tip (if any). I've used them for almost a year with no problems.

Also, it doesn't matter the amount of the fare, drivers are suppose to accept the credit card and you'll have to sign if the fare amount is over $25.

they are supposed to - but many don;t. Often they will say the machine is broken. Or they don;t have the modern equipment - just one of those little impression modules in the front seat with them.

If I'm taking a cab I always have cash. If it's a significant price and I want to charge it I call a car service.

I used them every day for the past week. The payment options on the screen were all the same, although some cabs and a second scanner (in addition to the one of the screen). By all appearances, they are using the same software.

Every cab I entered has a small screen with the same programs looping (a kids' (Jets) football team in green uniforms and an excerpt from a Today show piece about Miley Cyrus. You can also click on other tabs to watch other features...and also track your progress on a map.

When you reach your destination, tell the driver you will be paying with a credit card. (Twice, when cash was low I asked the driver as I entered if he took credit cards. All did).

The driver will click on something and the screen turns to the payment option. Click on credit/debit card and the total comes up (with tolls included if applicable) and THREE tip options - from top to bottom, 25%, 20% and 15%. You can also enter a different dollar amount for the tip if you wish. The total will be tallied and you click on "OK" to finish the transaction. The receipt will be printed and given to you.

In the past, I've always taken car services, but took cabs to and from the airport on this trip. I did reserve with a car service to make a business call in Queens - and the company called a car service for me for the return trip.

I tipped cab drivers more on this trip than ever before. With the economy so bad, it's just my way of trying to help out folks support their families. Everyone was VERY, VERY nice.

I was chatting with a couple at the airport about it. They were from Kansas City and they were shocked at how NICE everyone was. My comment was that unless you are getting in someone else's way, folks in NYC have always been nice. There does seem to be more appreciation shown toward tourists during this trip (vs previous trips).
