Vega in Bernal Heights area....Very good Italian
|
Millenium at Geary and Jones is definitely worth a visit. Not cheap. Different in that it is vegan.
|
For tapas and raciones, Contigo on Castro near 24th st. Reservations essential.
|
We went to La Ciccia on 30th and Church last night (nabbed a same-day reservation). Superb Sardinian food, informative waiter, cute little space, excellent wine list (though not cheap). $160 + tip for the 4 of us, with 2 appetizers, 2 glasses of wine, a side vegetable dish. Recommended!

Is State Bird Provisions open? I am having trouble with their online rez system. It will only show 1 date in late December and 1 time for it. Does that mean that is all they have avaialbe?

You do realize that almost half of the tables are for walk in, yes? Their online system allows for 60 day advance booking, so yes, that 1 date in late December could very well have been it. And FYI - it's gone now. Call, you may have better luck than online. |
Thanks for the info & link. Not sure we want to chance a walk in. Maybe I will give them a call.

Deb, did you go to Pasion? Modern Latin, 737 Irving, street parking possible. Worth going out of the way. Make reservations, it's popular.
|
Is it easy to get to Pasion from downtown without a car?
A question on Slanted Door-have always wanted to go but never seem to get there. Is it still considered good? I see very mixed reviews on it. Thanks |
yestravel, you can take the N Judah line. Will get you within 5 minute walk.
http://www.sfmta.com/ [use the 511 transit option to find route] |
Thanks! wish we had 5 weeks instead of 5 days in the city…always too many good restaurants to try.
|
The N-Judah stops directly in front of Pasion.
Stu Dudley |
well, that would be within 5 minutes.

Yestravel -- I had lunch at the Slanted Door a couple weeks ago. It was packed! The food was delicious but the restaurant was really noisy, which I considered a big drawback. After the lunch crowd thinned out a bit it was much more enjoyable.
|
@aprillacs --Thanks, i hate loud places. Still debating whether to go there or elsewhere. After being in VN, where I know you also traveled to, it's hard to match the food stateside. Also, we do have a large VN population and several very good VN restaurants in the DC area. Too many choices...
|
IF the weather is nice go to the take out part of Slanted Door and get you meal to go and eat outside.

@Debit, think we have eaten at Out the Door and probably didn't realize it was related to the Slanted Door. that might be a great option for lunch when we got to the Ferry bldg for the market. Thanks again for more info.
|
Yes, the food at a slanted Door is supposedly Vietnamese, but it isn't like anything we ate in Vietnam.

I liked--didn't love--Rich Table. I think the dishes at State Bird can be hit or miss ( have been twice), but you can order so many and not get stuffed and it's not particularly expensive and it's fun...I'd go back certainly. AQ:I've been three times. First time excellent. Second time for the tasting with wine pairings, good not great and some real service missteps. Third time a la carte--edging toward meh, I probably will not return.
I didn't think Poesia was good (my pasta was way overcooked!), but they are very charming and so is the room. I wanted to love it. Maybe an off night? Agree that Outerlands is v. Good but not sure sure I'd trek out there as a tourist. |
