Going to New York at the end of april and we are all crazy discount shoppers. I still love trendy clothes but without the huge price tag. Where are the best places for maybe trendy or vintage cheap clothing. Our hotel is in soho if this helps.

Best discounts are at Century 21 and Filene's basement. (One of my step daughters recently got a $300 purse aat the latter for only about $85.) Also - check New York Magazine web site for sample sales (but then you have to be a sample size).

And if you're willing to spend a day the Woodbury Commons outlets (by bus about an hour outside the city) have very good discounts for moderate and some upscale brands.

Sample sales despite their name usually have all sizes. Years ago, they carried only sample sizes, but that is not the case today. In fact, these sales are so popular that manufacturers use them to not only sell production over runs but to supplement their overall sales. The prices seem to have gone up in recent years and are not always a bargain. Woodbury Commons is good for a serious shopper's full day outing. They have outlets at all price ranges from Ann Taylor to Fendi and everything in between. You can check out their website. They're located in Harriman, NY.

thanks this is helpful. also i am graduating this year and if i don't get a dress before then I will be looking in NYC. I realize i am cutting it kinda close but no worries. Where would be a good place to find a dress that is inexpensive. I want something with character without the huge price tag and needs not be designer.

Define inexpensive for a dress...there are a ton of options, but I can give you specific recommendations with more information.

Well i was thinking between 100 and 150, definitely not more than 200.

If you sign up for Lord & Taylor emails they will send you coupons and you can get some brands there that sell at Bloomingdale's for much cheaper. 39th and 5th ave. Like BCGG.

H&M is also a good store for cheaper trendy clothes.....and there's a few locations in New York.
