Hi there!

I realized that there are a few postings on this topic that I hadn't read! Thank you for all of the help! As you may already know, our trip got postponed a little bit until end of July/beginning of August. I've developed our itinerary with the help of so many of you on this board - but I'd forgotten about this question that I'd posed about Crater Lake! Thanks to RolnKathy and everyone for the tips! We will be visiting Crater Lake at the beginning of August now and so the rim drive will be open (yay!) and I will be going through this post again shortly to write down tips!

Yesterday 7/11/11 a man walked onto a snowbank near the rim. The man ended up sliding over 300 feet down headfirst.
It took over 40 Rangers etc. to get him back up and to the helicopter. He was taken to RVMC in Medford.

Hi Tom - thanks for posting this. How awful. And I just saw that a tourist died on Vancouver Island while trying to take a photo too... It just reminds us to always be very careful (and of course, to observe all ropes/boundaries/etc. - which we always do).

Thanks,
Jenn
