Crabshack in Oregon?

Hi all --

We're going to be visiting Oregon this summer and my husband would really love to eat at a crabshack (the "traditional" kind with hammers and bibs (but not a tacky chain, if possible). Any suggestions? The only one we've managed to find online is one in Bandon (and unfortunately we're not heading that far south!).

Thanks!
Jenn

I can't think of a crabshack anywhere on the Oregon coast- when I want fresh crab I usually stop at a little fish place at the entrance to Florence Old Town where I buy I crab cocktail - already cleaned and shelled

The only thing I can think of is to buy your own at a fish market and take it back to the house you are staying at.

However I will check some friends who go to Newport a lot, they might have ideas

You could catch your own off the docks at Waldport- they rent crab rings there too -
but I don't think August is really crab season - it is a fun thing to do though

Best Resource I found:http://www.beachconnection.net/dining.htm
I have eaten the great clam chowder at the Bell Buoy in Seaside.

It's not a "crabshack" but Ecola Seafoods Restaurant & Market in Cannon Beach has crabs in its seafood case. They might not furnish the tools and bib, but I doubt they'd mind your husband enjoying the crab at one of the inside tables. And I'm sure they wouldn't mind if he took it to a picnic table outside.

Yes, crabshacks are not the norm here and it is not the best season for crab. That said, I second the recommendation for Ecola Seafoods. No views, but very good seafood. You can eat there or take it to go.

not a crabshack but lots of good crab and seafood dishes here - Local Ocean Seafood in Newport.

I also like Gino's fish market in Newport - basically a fish market but also restaurant ( very casual)- great fish and chips and fish tacos here

In Newport its fun to go and watch the sea lions on the docks - your kids will get a kick out watching them - occasionally they go away - but most of the time you will find them there - out laying in the sun
