Cows created by artists are all over the city for the summer-just like in Paris!

Fun! They did this in Cincinnati several years ago w/pigs (years ago Cincinnati was nicknamed "porkopolis"). They were all over the place - each one unique. What is neat now, several years later, is that you still see them here & there. They were auctioned off at the end of the summer so now when you see one it is kind of special - "hey look, it's one of the pigs!" There is one at my children's elementary school. Lots of fun!!

We did them in Dallas years ago...but I suppose they were steer. Tampa did huge sea turtles.

All were auctioned off for charity after a spell around the city. They are neat, aren't they?

cigalechanta Jun 6th, 2006 11:32 AM

Yes, ours will be auctioned off in September for the Jimmy fund.

The Twin Cities (actually St. Paul) had Peanuts characters - because that where Charles Schultz was from. Started with Snoopy, then the next year Charlie Brown, then Lucy.

Anyone know if there is a website describing artists and locations - there was when they did the Boston cod thing.

My favorite is still in Washington, DC a few years back when they did "Party Animals" which was decorated donkeys and elephants.

If I was not having a glass of wine when I posted I would have seen second post gives web link - sorry.

BuffaloGirl Jun 6th, 2006 06:19 PM

Guess what Buffalo had all over the city a few years ago???

I remember the fish in New Orleans.

Really cool. A lot of local businesses, including my SIL's bought some of them and have them displayed.

Enjoy the cows!

BetsyG Jun 6th, 2006 06:21 PM

I think the cows started in Kansas City.

gomiki Jun 6th, 2006 06:32 PM

We have whales on Cape Cod. I hope they fare better elsewhere. One was stolen from the Village Green in Hyannis by two drunk teenage girls and two have been vandalized.

There's HISTORY in 'them there' cows in Boston.
For those of you who are familiar with Beacon Hill, specifically Mount Vernon Street, you will notice that there is a row of one story "townhouses" on the side of Mount Vernon closest to Boston Commons. The reason for this involved deed restrictions in the 1700's that allowed those who built their mansions on the other side of Mount Vernon Street to be able to watch their "COWS" as they grazed on Boston Commons. (This tidbit from law school property class is easier to recollect than the Rule Against Perpetuities)!

Rhode Island did Mr. Potato Heads a few years ago.

Peterborough, NH, has Adirondack chairs...after being on display for a month, all will be auctioned to benefit a local non-profit.

Here in Troy Michigan we had beavers last summer becasue our largest road is called Big Beaver. The one at the Aquatic Center dressed in a pink swimsuit was something to see.

Keith Jun 7th, 2006 06:49 AM

In addition to cows, Kansas City has also done Teddy Bears.

bennnie Jun 7th, 2006 07:23 AM

Giro - sounds like you went to Suffolk Law!

ncgrrl Jun 7th, 2006 07:23 AM

Raleigh had red wolves a couple of years ago. Norfolk, VA had mermaids.

I expect Durham to have bulls or devils one year.

jorr Jun 7th, 2006 07:59 AM

Fargo has buffalo this year. Actually bison. Appropriate since they roamed in this area before we shot most all of them. As always local artists decorate them. Mine would have had real bullet holes in it and wrapped with barbed wire anchored to the ground. Maybe a Native American sitting next to it asking for money. An artistic statement about how the west was really "won".

kvick Jun 7th, 2006 09:09 AM

Omigod jorr, now you've done it!

jorr Jun 7th, 2006 10:12 AM

Omigod kvick, I hope I woke up some people about the history of the winning of the west. It was not a pretty picture. General Sherman was hired to exterminate Native Americans who got in the way of the Transcontinental Railroad. He exterminated men, women and children, plus killing Native American's prime source of survival, The Bison. Omigod, a fiberglass buffalo and a real Native American (not the wooden tourist shop type) to shead some light? Omigod, come to the midwest and learn about the true history of the westward expansion and the destruction of Native Americans.

Bennie: you too!
Prof. Lemelman was fulll of trivia...and other things.

bennnie Jun 8th, 2006 06:17 AM

Not Lemelmann but the other little weasel with the bowtie. Its been so long that I've wiped his name from my memory. No surprise that I don't practice wills and estates.

Fodorite018 Jun 8th, 2006 06:26 AM

Seattle had Pigs on Parade:@)

kvick Jun 8th, 2006 10:02 AM

Jorr, I thought you'd start a flood of opinion and invective with your 2:12 post, but it's been about 24 hours, and nothing.
I guess nobody cares about art as a statement any more.

Keith Jun 8th, 2006 10:54 AM

Or we all agreed.

Keith
