You give him the three options, and then gracefully excuse yourself from any further work on his behalf.

I gave him the three options and suggested he google "working abroad". I don't mind helping as long as he is doing some legwork himself.

thanks all for the great suggestions.

I thought there were au pair programs for foreigners specifically, Wash DC is full of them. I think these programs have special status and you can be an au pair under them for a short time or something like that--maybe it is somehow a student program and you have to take classes somewhere. In any case, from what I've read about them, males ARE very hard to place, a lot of families just won't hire a complete stranger who is a male to take care of their chidren.

I think he should get some kind of student visa if he really wants to do that.

You won't be deported the next day, but you will be deported if you violate your visa. If you don't mind being illegal, obviously, that's a different issue (as to how people can stay past their visas). I don't think this guy wants to do that. I have an acquintance who violated his working visa (I don't know what kind, but it is attached to a job and needs to be renewed by the employer) and he was deported within a couple months. And he was Danish. Sure, he could have stayed without a job and the ramifications on his future travel plans and visas, but he didn't want to do that, he was a grown adult. His employer would not retain him illegally, of course, they were a regular company and he was a senior engineer or something in management. Anyway, they gave him some time to leave the country, but I think it was only 1-2 months to get his affairs in order.
