Courtyard Marriott LAX area. Safe?
 

It's pretty much on the corner of Sepulveda and Century Blvd next to LAX.

We'll be staying only overnight but was going to walk up Sepulveda a couple block to an In N Out Burger up the street.

But is that a safe area to be walking around?

At maps.google.com I see it's an area with a lot of freeways and In 'n Out Burger is .1 miles away.

Overall that is not what you'd call a safe area, but then again, you'll be walking along what is more or less a stretch of freeway - Sepulveda right there is many lanes wide and you couldn't, for example, dream to cross it on foot.

But you'd have to be awfully unlucky to encounter some bad element along that stretch - you'll be the only ones walking anyway, just walk with a purposeful stride, marvel at the airplanes flying low overhead, and enjoy your double-double. Leave your jewelry behind and don't look like you are a worthwhile target. That said, I would walk there without even thinking about safety, so you're way ahead of me.

If you go just a bit further than the In'N Out (one of my faves on the way to the airport) you get to a bunch more good places, including a Trader Joe next to a Panadera. The entrances are from the back, from the parking lot.

I used google street view and it looks like you're walking past a ton of parking lots, then hit a sports bar of some kind across from where IN and OUT is.

It looked sketchy at best, so thought I'd ask. Thanks.

Actually, the Courtyard Marriott is a few blocks east of Sepulveda on Century Boulevard. It's about 2 miles to In N Out Burger.

Generally, the area is safe. (I drive the Sepulveda portion of this route every day on the way to work.) I'd probably walk there early in the evening, but flag down a cab for a ride back.

Yes, the time of day you will be strolling is something to think about.

You are right about the car lots - it is part of the distant LA airport parking.

Anyhoo, that assessment is s-o-o-o-o not what aficionados of this chain think! Sure, there is no disputing tastes, the Romans knew that (de gustibus...), hey - some people even like McDonalds!

But the In'n Out fries are from freshly chopped (you can watch them do it) non-frozen spuds, so they are the fresh real thing. Yummy!

Mapquest (from the In'n Out website) shows it to be on the wrong side of Sepulveda. It is on the western side, 9149 S. Sepulveda, Westchester CA 90045.

The distance is 0.7 miles, or 1.1 km if that rings a bell, ten minutes at a good stride.

Walk along Century to Sepulveda, don't take Vicksburg then W. 98th St., that's a bit too desolate and dark.

Dang, now I'm hungry, and in a place where there are no In'n Outs (or Trader Joes or El Pollo Locos for that matter...).

It looks like there's a crosswalk with a light right at the corner of Century and Sepulveda, so you could cross over to the other side there. It doesn't look like there's another crosswalk from that corner to the In-n-Out Burger, so cross there and then walk pass the empty parking lots.

If you do it in the daytime, there shouldn't be too much of a problem, since this is a heavily travelled road (by car).

DalaiLlama's advice is good - don't dress conspicuously, walk fast with a purposeful stride, etc.

In-n-Out is very healthy food. The hamburger is all meat with no preservatives, etc added. Fries are freshly made. Milkshakes are made with real milk and ice cream and not artificial stuff. Taste is somewhat above average.

That's why I always wonder why they taste like fried cardboard!

(FWIW, I have children in their 20s, which goes a long way toward explaining why I have eaten at In N Out hundreds of times in my life!)

I agree with easytraveler, the food is somewhat above average -- if the average in question is your average fast food restaurant. No way an In N Out burger stands up against a really good restaurant burger.

I think its safe, just an unpleasant walk.
