Couple spending 5 days...hotel in La Jolla or Gaslamp?

My husband and I are looking to get away for a few days. We'll be there 5 days (4 nights) in early/mid June. We want to do some site-seeing, but we're mainly interested in relaxing (beach, nice dinners, walking around, etc.). I heard there were some wineries in the area. Does anyone know of any?
--Where should we stay?
--Do we need to rent a car or are taxis better?
--How is the weather during this time?

Thanks!

Sorry I forgot to mention our trip is in San Diego.

A car is infinitely better than taxis in San Diego (this is not a "dense" city like Manhattan or London, or even downtown San Francisco).

June is our worst month to vacation in San Diego. The weather is ususually gray, overcast and on the cool side. The beach water will be in the high 50's or low 60's.

If you want to just relax, and don't want to do a lot of sightseeing, I would definately recommend staying in Coronado. It is a great place for walking, biking, walking on the beach. There are many nice restaurants. If you want to go into downtown San Diego the trip over the bridge is a quick 10 minutes (or less).

I have stayed in both La Jolla and Gaslamp and they are both great. Gaslamp, however, has more to do at night IMO. Definitely get a car to move around; taxis are crazy expensive. And as long as you have a car it is less important where you stay.

I think Coronado is a good idea for what you want to to, and while the Gaslamp is fun, I dont know if I'd stay there because it IS always busy and noisy. Have a great time!

I'd choose Coronado as well. Sounds perfect for what you are looking for.

Rent a vehicle & obtain a city map. San Diego is very easy to navigate for a large city. With a rental vehicle getting around to places such as Point Loma, La Jolla, Balboa Park, Gaslamp Quarter, and Coronado is a snap. You will not spend a lot of time driving, but seeing and doing those things you mentioned you want to do & getting the favor of beautiful San Diego. It's my favorite place to visit coming from Alaska.

Thanks for your help!! We decided to stay in Coronado and rent a car so we can visit the other places suggested.

You will love Coronado even in the June gloom.

Make sure you go to the landing - gorgeous views of San Diego. Take the ferry to SD and walk around the embarcadero, visit the Midway and then you can walk to the Gaslamp. Lots of good eating places there. Also, recommend eating anywhere in Little Italy, but you would probably want to drive there, although it can be walked from the embarcadero.

You can take a day trip to Temecula. Its about an hour drive from Coronado. There are wineries there.

Another day trip would definitely be La Jolla, see the cove and walk around the shops near there, have a drink at the Valencia.

You will have plenty to do in 5 days.
