Could use some help with coastal Oregon itin
 

I plan to spend two days in Portland at the Benson Hotel, and then rent a car and drive to Yachats where I will spend two nights. I will be spending a total of 6 or 7 nights in Oregon. Any suggestions on where to stay for my other 2 or 3 nights (other coastal towns). Thanks.

Cannon Beach, Neskowin,Depoe Bay, Newport, Florence & Bandon are all interesting places on the Oregon coast. <BR>Of the above the least attractive town is Florence, but it does have the very interesting dunes area all around it. <BR>Being as you are going to be in Yachats already I would say either go north to Cannon Beach or south to Bandon.

The scenery around Yachats is very nice, and you can easily make a day trip down to Florence to see the dunes (and don't miss the premier Oregon coast picture spot at Heceta Head lighthouse north of Florence.) Otherwise, the best coastal scenery on the south coast is between Bandon and the California line, which may be a bit on the distant side for you if you plan to return to Portland after. Instead, you might consider heading north through Astoria and across the Columbia River to Ilwaco, WA then poke around the Long Beach Peninsula - Oysterville is interesting; have dinner at the Ark in Nahcotta, one of the NW's best restaurants. Then return to Portland along the north shore of the Columbia River - a lovely area well off the beaten path.

Emily and I stopped off at Heceta Head, nice place for a break. I was disappointed with Warrenton/Astoria up north and would give that a miss. <BR> <BR>Try Newport, Oregon.

Most of the towns mentioned above are fairly bare. I'm from North Bend/Coos Bay area (about 45 minutes north of Bandon) and would recommend that area. Things to do and see would include Cape Arago (stop off on the side of the road and follow one of the trails to the edge of a cliff or walk down to the various beaches), Sunset Beach for looking at tide pools, the sand dunes (rent a 4-wheeler), Charleston for the fish plants and the boats, etc. etc. The most beautiful things in Oregon are those not written in a book. Its all about exploring. North Bend/Coos Bay has good places to eat and is a little larger/less resort like that most of the above cities. How about a few days near the Columbia Gorge. The Edgefield is a fun place to stay (complete opposite of the Benson). Or stop and spend a night in the wine country. <BR> <BR>I also really like Cannon Beach. A little more upscale than a lot of the beach towns down along the coast.

Don't listen to that person Pam above. She is one of the owners of the Seaquest B&B and posts here all the time only about that B&B saying it's great. It's anything but great. The owners are the rudest, most sullen B&B hosts on the west coast. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you enjoy a ruined vacation like we had once we stayed in that horrid place.

Lyn, if casino gambling interests you, there's a nice one at Lincoln City called Chinook Winds. It doesn't come with a hotel, but there are many nearby. DO NOT stay at the nearest one, Shiloh Inn, unless you're willing to pay more for the new ocean rooms. We picked that hotel because it was only a few minutes' walk (crossing the parking lot) to the entrance - and it really was very convenient - but the old, small rooms were pretty bad. We should have looked at the rooms before deciding to stay. Fortunately, we were only staying overnight so could tolerate it. Would have been more easy to take if the price had not been $84 (no breakfast included) for that non-airconditioned double. <BR> <BR>If you go, be sure to immediately sign up for their slot card, since they give you a coupon book good for several things (including discounts in their restaurant and a discount at a hotel). The casino's food is nothing to write home about, but it's okay. <BR> <BR>

we just returned from a 10 day trip to oregon. Started in portland, drove the Columbia River Gorge (don't miss Bonnevile Dam fish ladders) Overnight in Bend. Amazing diversity of landscape. Planned to spend 3 days in Yachats, but ended up extending to 5 days. It is a great location to explore all the surrounding towns and sights. They place beautiful glass floats on the beach for interpid beach combers to find.... makes beach walks exciting. Yachats is the BEST!!! enjoy

Would you like a nights lodging with the Bin Laden family? If you say yes then by all mean you will enjoy the Sea Quest B&B. Well, actually they may be less friendly than that to tell the truth, although the only disaster will be your vacation with a stay at the Sea Quest.

Pam, if you really think SeaQuest is the best AND you're not affiliated with them in any way, please post by what criteria they meet your standard of "the best" and also give us a list of sites where there are independent reviews of this lodging. Otherwise, back off and stop using this forum to push your B&B. <BR>Lyn, you don't say when you'll be in Oregon or whether you're from the area, but I must advise you to be careful walking the beaches at this time of year. "Sneaker waves" are incredibly powerful. Before strolling the beach make sure to check if there are any warnings posted. <BR>I like Cannon Beach and am also a big fan of the dunes below Florence (but stick to the paths--go off the path and you run the risk of hitting quicksand). I'm not a "nervous Nellie", but many visitors to the Oregon coast don't realize how wild it still is in many ways.

Pam, knock it off. You already posted that message on this thread. Until you provide some links to independent reviews that agree with your shameless huckstering, we're going to go with the opinions of other Fodorites that say SeaQuest is the WORST. AND we're going to complain to Fodors about you!

Definitly see the Columbia Gorge, it is quite beautiful. Cannon Beach is nice but I agree with the above poster about Astoria, yulk! Also Newport is great and isn't that where the aquarium is? Saw it on its opening weekend years ago. The point about the sneaker waves made me laugh as when my son was 2 he was blasted by one of those and was not happy about it. I think he's been scarred for life as he is not an ocean kid like I was!!!!<BR><BR>Portland is a beautiful city. Don't miss the parks full of roses and rhododendrons (sp?)

The aquarium is in Newport, if you want good fish and chips eat at Ginos there. Also, make sure you check out the Outlet Mall in Lincoln City, very good shopping....

Hi Lyn! My family and I have been visiting the Oregon Coast for the past 10 years. We have been all up and down the coast, but ultimately go back to Cannon Beach/Tolovana area, mostly because it has lots of things to do and it's only a 2 hour drive from Portland. We like the beach, shopping and restaurants. I agree that Astoria is not the greatest place, but they do have a great Maritime museum. Been to Yahats, too and liked it a lot. Not too far from there are the Sea Lion Caves which are fun, especially if you have kids. In Cannon Beach, we've stayed at the Hallmark Inn on the beach(very nice and bring your swimsuit they have an indoor pool). For the last 5 or 6 years we've rented a small 2 bedroom cottage in Tolvana Park right on the beach. If you'd like the name and number feel free to e-mail me.
