Could someone give me some tips on using priceline.com for San Francisco hotels
I have never used priceline.com and I am needing to find a hotel in San Francisco for first week of October. You have to give downtown San Francisco as your choice of area. I am afraid I will get in an area that might not be convenient or safe. Can anyone give me tips on how to get the best hotel area for the least amount of money? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks

You can check out this site:

http://pub4.ezboard.com/bpricelineandexpediabidding

It contains a lot of useful info. on using priceline.

Good LUCK.

Use Quikbook.com for great rates in S.F. Just like booking directly with the hotel but a lot less expensive. You can cancel up until arrival and you will know before you book which hotel you are staying at. Just my opinion of course.

I'll bring back a post for you asking the same questions about Chicago-- lots of good info there.

It's really late to be booking now for the first wek of October in San Francisco. You may want to reserve something, anything, forthwith, then keep shopping. Good luck!

I personally would not be comfortable listing "downtown" SF as an area. The safety and comfort changes rapidly within the "downtown" area. We live nearby and know this firsthand. I would start checking with the motels on "motel row" on Lombard Street. Safe area, nothing fancy but clean and acceptable.

Sheila, I just checked the "downtown" San Francisco boundaries at Priceline and I can tell you that it definitely includes some pretty bad neighborhoods. I would vote against it, especially if you're a woman on her own.

Thanks everyone for the great advise. I have decided against priceline and will try quikbook. This is a spur of the moment type trip so the date can be changed. Since I am flexable with the date, I am hoping to find a reasonable flight and room. Thanks everyone.

ok I need your expert advise. These are the hotels I found on quikbook in my price range: Galleria Park Hotel on Sutton, Maxwell on Geary, Monticello Inn between Powell and Cynil Magnim and Hotel Rex between Mason and Powell. Can anyone recommend any of these? Thanks

Hotel Rex. Good luck and book now! I'm so glad you won't be dealing with the S&M guys in SOMA!

I had a great experience using Priceline for a SF hotel...and booked it 1 month in advance, so it's not too late. We got a room at the Renaissance Parc 55 & it was excellent.
Last visit, we stayed at the Maxwell (not a Priceline deal) & it was very nice also.
