Coqui Frogs on Big Island

Will we be kept awake by coqui frogs in January when we stay in Hilo for two nights and in Kailua-Kona for three nights?

Frogs gave me two sleepless nights in Guatemala a few years ago, and I'd like to avoid a repeat of this experience.

They got rid of the coqui’s back in early May of this year. While there in June (spend two nights in VNP) I did not hear any. Enjoy your trip.

I always travel with a pair of foam earplugs in my tolietry case. Between motels too close to the freeway, snoring husband, or noisy a/c units, I've never had a problem with noise!

We were in Hilo for a long weekend earlier this month -- lots of coqui frogs, chirping away every night.

Keep your sliding doors closed, and you won't hear them at all.

In Puerto Rico, where the little tree frogs originated, they are considered a national treasure and are said to bring good luck. We've always found their mating call to be more melodious than most birds' singing. Lulls you to sleep. I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I guess it depends on what you're used to, but frog noise has never been a problem for me on the Big Island. Compared to thumping Hip Hop music being blasted by our neighbors every night, barking dogs, fire truck and ambulance sirens etc etc, the sound of frogs is downright relaxing.

But anyway here's a map of the current Coqui Frog populations on the island. Looks like it might be more of an issue in Hilo than Kona.
